Woodhouse Scrub Jay

Woodhouse Scrub Jay

Aphelocoma woodhouseii

  • ORDER: Passeriformes
  • FAMILY: Corvidae

They are extreme lovers of bread and sunflower seeds. They are also big bullies that scream at each other and have even fought with their feet, grappling around on their backs in the dirt of our backyard. That was the day the Jays got their own feeder. They’ll still argue among themselves, but they’ll hopefully leave the little guys alone and make for a much more tranquil backyard.

Significant coloring differences exist between the Woodhouse Scrub and the Pinyon Jay. Note the white eyebrows, white bib and pale belly .
