Mountain Bluebird

Mountain Bluebird

Sialia currucoides

  • ORDER: Passeriformes
  • FAMILY: Turdidae

It took me forever to classify this bird! What I discovered is that opposed to the brilliant blue of the mountain blue birds I’ve seen in the past, there is a paler, more powder blue variation.

What I’ve seen says that the image below is a juvenile female. Which may explain her nuisance ability to keep flying into the window…. I’ve also read that the female bluebird chooses her mate on his ability to locate the best nest cavity. His song and his looks are not her primary concern. So, basically, the females are smart. You know, once they cease trying to get in the sealed window for hours at a time.

This female mountain bluebird is sitting at a nesting cavity that had been created by a Flicker a few years ago. We filled it in, hence the substrate upon which she stands. The flickers created a new hole and then later came back and hollowed out this one. We’ve decided to leave it for the time being. So they don’t feel compelled to create yet another hole.

This is also her. Notice the way her rump shows off her bluebird colors vs the more drab appearance from above.
