Lesser Goldfinch

Lesser Gold Finch

Spinus psaltria

  • ORDER: Passeriformes
  • FAMILY: Fringillidae

I of course assumed this bird to be an American Goldfinch, as it is the only golden finch I’d ever seen before. But it looked a little different somehow. The black cap of the American Goldfinch stops much higher than does that of the Lesser. There are color variations among the Lesser. The Lesser Goldfinch is generally grayer than it’s brilliantly colored male cousin.

The lesser goldfinch is a western bird, which explains why this mid-western born naturalist hads’t seen them before.
