Fauna

The animals of the Wild Horse Mesa are truly amazing. It takes so much for them to survive in this climate. At 8500 ft, we’re classified as being in the Montane Zone, which is 1500 ft below the subalpine zone… with very little grasses or water to be found.

Four wild horses on the road. One young one right in front of the car, a pregnant mare behind her and 2 others in the sagebrush off the side of the road. In the background is the snow-capped Mount Blanca.

Some days we’re in the right place at the right time…

Also, note that I have not found my portable hard drive since we moved. This houses absolutely years worth of pictures of plants and animals on the WHM. Yes. I am devastated. The pictures found on the flora and fauna pages are either other photographers work in public domain or are captured from my personal facebook. They’ll be replaced as soon as possible! Also, if you’re reading this. Please say a prayer that I find the portable hard drive. I’d appreciate it very much.

The following pages are about the animals we’ve seen or have been told of from a reliable source. Note that if the link is on the first part of the name, then that link will take you to a page within our website. However, that page could be underdeveloped at this time. If the link is beyond the first species name, it will take you to an outside source and open in a new window. The outside links will be on the animal’s page itself and take you to things such as their sounds and range maps.
