4/1/19 Put out some crackers near the feeding table. The Rock Squirrel became braver and the Woodhouse Jays flying overhead didn’t scare it away. What did? A second squirrel! A Raven became much bolder as well. Still flew off any time I made a move inside the house, fly completely off if I went outside, but major progress, it was in the backyard – after the crackers, even in the presence of a squirrel.
4/1/19 From outside the sliding glass doors, I saw what I first thought were tiny moths. I was ecstatic because the bluebirds keep visiting, but just briefly because there isn’t any food for them. Upon a closer look, I concluded them to be ants, some flying, some without wings. But after a quick internet search… termites. Then I saw a mass of them. At the doorway to the small greenhouse. Not excited anymore. However, I will say that there was a female bluebird take some for the team. I just wish she’d invited invited her friends to the party.
4/6/19 Saw 17 Turkey Vultures soaring above San Luis in the early evening.
4/15/19 Saw a single Turkey Vulture soaring in the extreme winds blowing above the Mesa.
4/21/2019 The first Broad-tailed Hummingbirds showed up at the feeder.
4/26/19 Male Goldfinch in breeding plumage in the backyard for the first time.
4/27/19 Red Admiral Butterflies. Saw several along with a couple of other butterflies from an unidentified species. They flew through an open tree corridor from the SW to the NE.
4/28/19 A pair of Mourning Doves were pecking at the gravel in front of the garage. The first we’ve seen up here this year, maybe ever up here actually.
