March

3/2/19 A single Bald Eagle flew over the property.

3/5/19 Coyotes singing. No sounds of very young voices.
The air was still and I heard nothing except for the crunching of my footsteps in the snow. I paused to look around and heard a Coyote pack singing to the west. About a minute later, they were joined by a pack to the east.

3/9/19 Saw a Mountain Bluebird flying across the road and into a field, just below the Mesa in San Pedro.

3/14/19 After the torrential downpour of a couple of nights ago and yesterday’s blizzard in what they termed a Bomb Cyclone (though we were not at the epicenter) the roads were the worst I’ve ever seen here. Mud. On the main road down (often referred to as the backroad I’ve recently discovered, it’s our from way) I saw a tire track rut at least a foot deep in the mud. It was like driving in quick sand. At any rate, in the parts that were still snowy, I saw many tracks, I slowed to look and in all 1/2 dozen cases, they showed coyote. Only one set of tracks, they went on and on.

3/14/19 Saw the first chipmunk of the season. He was eating from the bird seed and the bread that we had on the ground for the birds.

3/15/19 A herd of seven wild horses came to visit the shop! Mottled black and gray (black from a distance) herd stallion, one yearling and her mare, 2 pregnant mares, an older mare and another beauty that will most likely be next year’s new mom. Saw they were eating dried clover and below it, barely showing were little green clover sprouts of the new season.

3/26/19 Pair of Mountain Bluebirds m/f seen in tree in the backyard. First we’ve seen them at this elevation this year, but we’ve been in Illinois for over a week.

3/30/2019 Rock squirrel eating bird seed in the back yard. First time we’ve seen one at all.

3/30/19 Raven pair flying together. Landed in the trees in the backyard, one carrying nesting materials in its beak.
