For those of you who have never heard of a Phenology Calendar, I understand, trust me. It was one of my favorite things about keeping Wildlife Prairie State Park’s website, but most people had never heard of it. A phenology calendar is a recording of dates when something occurs in nature. Years of data will tell you when something should most likely occur again. It’s about the cycles of nature. For instance, you don’t have to tell the folks in Monte Vista that between early March and mid April the Sandhill cranes migrate through on the way to their northern breeding grounds. They come back through again in October and November.
MAY
5/8/19 Started snowing last night. Was at 7.5 inches this morning. Continued to snow for some time but significant melting occurred throughout the day.
5/9/2019 Started snowing again later last night. Received another 5.25 inches by morning. Again, significant melting throughout the day.
Though we put out fresh hummer feeders each day, only 3 of the previous 12 hummingbirds came back.
5/12/2019 There are 5 hummingbirds at the feeders today.
5/12/2019 Saw two Fence Lizards today. First the female then about 10 minutes later, I saw the male. Though he hadn’t seen her, he looked her direction and literally did several push ups. He then hopped across rocks and scurried under the brush appearing from out under a tree and joining her on the rock where she was basking. See the pictures here.
