Also know as the space ship or flying saucer clouds. Not only do they resemble a flying saucer, people have believed that they were shaped like that because they hid flying saucers behind what we earthlings thought was, you know, like just a really cool cloud. Interestingly, when there are multiple lenticular clouds, people commonly think they look like a stack of pancakes.
These special mountain clouds are formed when rapidly moving stable air is pushed up the side of a steep mountain. The air cools enough and condenses. This creates the cloud. It doesn’t move around the sky like other clouds, but mostly stays put. New air rising creates the freshness of the cloud and keeps it alive. This is quite different from other clouds.
Though considered a mountain cloud, they can also form over flat terrain due to shear winds created by a front.
My absolute favorite lenticular cloud photo is of Mt Blanca. The cloud was laying on down over the top of the mountain, it looked like someone was tossing a silk sheet over the top and the outsides of the sheet were falling down before the middle. That picture, is on the missing portable hard drive. You’d really like too, I know. So if you could say a prayer that I find it, I’d greatly appreciate it.
