Meteorologists look at the cirrus clouds to assist them in predicting the weather. Sometimes the cirrus cloud simply shows us that there is nice weather. When they form and dissipate, it just reminds us that we are having a beautiful day.
Then the cirrus clouds are known as the fair weather clouds. They are formed from ice crystals that are blown into wisps. One of my favorite names for these clouds is mare’s tails. I think the feature photo really shows how they got their name.
When the cirrus clouds band together, they form cirrostratus clouds. The term stratus refers to the fact it is in a layer.
In the picture below, we see cirrus clouds at the top and the beginnings of cirrostratus lower in the photo.

If the cirrus clouds are spreading out from the west or the SW and are becoming cirrostratus clouds, we should expect a depression within 24-36 hours. This would bring with it wind and precipitation.
